SOMA was founded by practitioners who wanted to do project controls properly — not wrap it in jargon, not stretch it into unrelated advisory, not teach it from a textbook. We help complex programmes make the decisions that actually matter.
Why we exist
Every major UK programme ends up in the same three conversations: is the schedule realistic, can we afford it, and what are we actually worried about? Most controls functions are set up to report those answers. A much smaller number are set up to get them right.
We are built for the second job. Small, senior, honest about the numbers. We have sat in the chair — planning, cost engineering, risk leadership — on live programmes in rail, highways, nuclear, water, defence and energy. That experience is the product.
What we believe
- Controls is a craft, not a commodity. Tools matter, but the judgment behind them matters more.
- Plain English is professional. If we can't explain the decision to a non-specialist, we don't understand it yet.
- The truth belongs at the top of the page. Bad news does not age well. We surface it early and offer a route through.
- Clients should leave stronger than they arrived.Our engagements finish. The capability we leave behind does not.

- SOMA Project Controls is a UK project controls consultancy founded in 2024 and based in Middlesbrough. We specialise in quantitative risk analysis (QRA), project planning and scheduling, cost management, risk operations, integrated PMO, and project controls advisory. Registered as SOMA PROJECT CONTROLS LTD (Companies House 16001237), we are chartered through APM, ACostE, AACE, RICS and IRM. Our lead capability is QRA delivered to AACE International recommended practices.

We specialise in QRA and schedule risk to AACE standards, and we write reports in plain English so decision-makers can act on them. We do not run controls as a staff-augmentation commodity.
- What tools does SOMA use for QRA?
- Our Monte Carlo models run in Safran Risk, Oracle Primavera Risk Analysis, @Risk for Excel, and Deltek Acumen Risk, depending on the project and client preference. We integrate cost-schedule risk analysis (QCSRA) where the schedule is well-structured enough to support it. We output P50, P80 and P95 confidence curves, tornado charts, and sensitivity analysis, plus a written report aligned to AACE International recommended practices (57R-09, 113R-20, 118R-21, 123R-22).
